Abstract

Corn (Zea mays L.) is a major food commodity in Indonesia whose productivity has declined due to attacks by the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda). Sustainable and environmentally friendly control strategies can be implemented through the use of botanical pesticides. Clove leaves (Syzygium aromaticum) and tobacco leaves (Nicotiana tabacum) contain bioactive compounds such as eugenol, caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, and humulene, which exhibit insecticidal activity. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of clove and tobacco leaf extracts on the mortality of S. frugiperda larvae under laboratory conditions. The experiment used a completely randomized design with two factors, namely extract type (clove, tobacco, and their combination) and concentration (0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%), with three replications. The results showed that increasing extract concentration significantly increased larval mortality, although feeding inhibition was classified as very weak. The lowest LC₅₀ value was obtained from the combined extract (0.28%), and the fastest LT₅₀ was 22.2 hours.
