Abstract

A cinnamaldehyde plant with a capacity of 40,000 tons per year is planned to be established in Gresik, East Java, operating 24 hours a day for 330 days per year. The production process uses acetaldehyde and benzaldehyde as raw materials with sodium hydroxide as a catalyst through an aldol condensation method. This method is selected due to its higher conversion and lower operating conditions compared to steam distillation. The production process consists of three main stages: raw material preparation, product formation, and product purification. During the preparation stage, the raw materials are heated to 70°C, while sodium hydroxide is dissolved in water to a concentration of 0.6%. The aldol condensation reaction takes place in a reactor, followed by a neutralization reaction using sulfuric acid. The reactor effluent is then sent to a decanter to remove salts, and the product is further purified in a distillation column to obtain cinnamaldehyde with a purity of 99%.
