Abstract

Cumene (isopropylbenzene) is an important raw material for phenol and acetone production. Indonesia’s growing demand is still met by imports, motivating the development of a domestic cumene plant using benzene and propylene via an alkylation process. The plant is designed with a capacity of 70,000 tons per year, operating 330 days per year. Gas-phase alkylation with a beta zeolite catalyst is selected for its high conversion, selectivity, and environmental benefits. The reaction is carried out in a fixed-bed reactor at 230 °C and 15 atm, with a transalkylation unit to enhance cumene yield. The plant is planned for the Lomanis Industrial Area, Cilacap, Central Java. Economic analysis shows feasibility, with an IRR of 30.48%, PBP of 3.9 years, and BEP of 32.12%
