Abstract

This study investigates the characteristics of bio-oil produced from the co-pyrolysis of coconut shell (Cocos nucifera) and Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) plastic as an alternative energy source. The experiment was conducted by varying the feedstock ratio of coconut shell to LDPE from 90:10 to 50:50 and the pyrolysis temperature from 400 to 600 °C. The resulting bio-oil was analyzed in terms of yield, density, viscosity, and heating value, and the results were compared with the ASTM D7544 standard. The results indicate that increasing the LDPE ratio and pyrolysis temperature enhances bio-oil yield and heating value, while reducing density and viscosity. The optimum condition was achieved at a 50:50 feedstock ratio and a temperature of 600 °C. These findings demonstrate that co-pyrolysis of coconut shell and LDPE has strong potential for waste utilization and alternative fuel production. Keywords: Bio-oil, coconut shell, LDPE, co-pyrolysis, alternative energy.
