Abstract

Sorghum bagasse is an agricultural waste containing lignocellulose that has the potential to be used as a carbon precursor. In this study, activated carbon was synthesized from sorghum bagasse using chemical activation (KOH, K₂CO₃, ZnCl₂) and physical activation (800°C). The resulting material was characterized using XRD, SEM, BET, and FTIR, and its adsorption was tested against methylene blue (10–50 ppm) with a variation in time of 20–100 minutes. The results showed that at a concentration of 50 ppm, the ZnCl₂ activator achieved 99.56% adsorption at 80 minutes, while KOH and K₂CO₃ required 100 minutes to achieve a similar value. Overall, KOH was the best activator in the production of activated carbon, but ZnCl₂ excelled in surface area and K₂CO₃ was more suitable for surface chemistry applications.
