Abstract
In the development of digital media within the era of media convergence, media companies are increasingly required to deliver experiences that are relevant and accessible to audiences across generations. The Onears application represents the digital transformation effort of Mercury Media Group, aiming to integrate the characteristics of conventional radio with the consumption patterns of contemporary app-based media. However, users’ perceptions of the interface quality, navigational structure, and content dynamics have not been fully understood. This study was conducted to explore how both long-time users and new users perceive their experience with Onears and how the application reflects the broader practice of media convergence within the radio industry. The central focus of this research is to examine the extent to which interface design, technical stability, and content updates shape users’ interpretations and overall experience with the application. This research draws on the Stimulus–Organism–Response (S-O-R) framework, Gibson’s theory of direct perception, and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) concepts to analyze the relationship between visual elements of the application (stimulus), users’ cognitive processes (organism), and the responses that emerge during their interaction. Through this theoretical lens, the study investigates how affordances, visual hierarchy, design consistency, and content presentation are interpreted by users. A qualitative approach was employed to gain an in-depth understanding of user experience through user-testing sessions, verbal protocol (think-aloud) techniques, observations, and in-depth interviews with long-time users, new users, UI/UX practitioners, and internal stakeholders. Data collection involved observing user behavior while interacting with the application's features and documenting the cognitive processes that guided their navigation. The findings indicate that users’ perceptions of Onears reflect a mixture of potential and challenges. Users observed that the interface structure and visual consistency do not provide sufficient navigational clarity, reducing ease of use, particularly for new users. Long-time users also reported confusion when locating key features such as Live Radio due to the absence of a clear visual hierarchy. Digital content such as podcasts, radio magazines, and informational banners were perceived as inactive due to infrequent updates, which undermines the impression of a dynamic and actively managed media application. This study highlights that strengthening interface design, enhancing application stability, and ensuring consistent content updates are essential for media companies seeking to maintain relevance and effectiveness in implementing media convergence in the digital era.
