Abstract
Efforts to control sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) pests can be carried out using biological agents such as the egg parasitoid Trichogramma chilonis. The mass rearing of T. chilonis in the laboratory commonly uses Corcyra cephalonica eggs as a host, but the rearing performance has not been optimal due to limited information on the parasitoid’s optimal production potential. Factors such as the number of host egg cards and the duration of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation are suspected to influence parasitoid production. This study aimed to determine the effect of C. cephalonica egg card number and UV exposure duration on the rearing quality of T. chilonis under laboratory conditions. The experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors number of egg cards and UV exposure duration each repeated three times, resulting in 27 treatment combinations. The results showed that both factors significantly affected parasitization rate, adult emergence, and sex ratio, but there was no interaction between them. The use of three egg cards and 60 minutes of UV exposure produced the best rearing quality and is recommended for the mass production of T. chilonis. The optimal number of egg cards and UV exposure duration can increase parasitoid production.
