Abstract

Seawater intrusion is a dominant factor that triggers an increase in coastal soil salinity, particularly sodium (Na) accumulation, which affects land quality and function. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of sodium distribution and identify factors that influence its increase in Wonorejo Village, Surabaya. The study used a survey approach with 39 soil samples taken at 13 points along a 6 km transect from the coastline and at three depths (0–20 cm, 20–40 cm, and 40–60 cm). Laboratory analyses included soil texture, pH, DHL, KTK, organic C, exchangeable cations (Na, Ca, Mg, K), and microbial populations. The results showed that seawater intrusion had a significant effect on increasing sodium levels, with the highest concentrations in areas close to the coastline and a tendency to decrease in more distant locations. The dusty clay soil texture slowed down the salt leaching process, thereby supporting Na accumulation. Regression analysis confirmed that distance from the coastline and DHL were the most dominant factors in controlling sodium dynamics, while microbial activity decreased in areas with high salinity. Overall, the results confirm that seawater intrusion is the main determinant of changes in the chemical properties of coastal soils and should be taken into consideration in environmental and land resource management
