Abstract
The rapid development of digital technology provides new opportunities for innovative approaches to history education, a subject often perceived as monotonous by students. This study develops a 2D adventure educational game themed Bandung Lautan Api, integrating branching narrative and a Numberlink-based minigame as interactive learning mechanisms to enhance students’ understanding of the 1946 historical event. The game allows players to make meaningful choices that influence the storyline while solving logical challenges that simulate strategic coordination during the Bandung resistance. A total of 23 students from SMP Negeri 6 Surabaya participated in a pre-test–post-test experimental design. The results indicate a significant improvement in learning outcomes, with mean scores increasing from 53.48 (pre-test) to 94.78 (post-test), confirmed by the Wilcoxon test (p = 0.000 < 0.05). User experience evaluation using the GUESS-18 instrument yielded mean scores ranging from 3.45 to 4.23, with Audio Aesthetics achieving the highest rating (4.23) and Educational Value rated strongly at 4.03. All items met validity requirements (r > 0.413; p < 0.05), supported by strong reliability coefficients for branching narrative (α = 0.838) and Numberlink (α = 0.661). These findings demonstrate that the Bandung Lautan Api educational game effectively enhances historical understanding, cognitive engagement, and learning motivation in contemporary digital learning environments.
