Abstract

This thesis presents the design of a magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (MgSO₄·7H₂O) fertilizer plant with a production capacity of 42,000 tons per year, planned to be established in the JIIPE Industrial Area, Manyar, Gresik, East Java, Indonesia. The primary raw materials used in the process are bittern sourced from salt ponds in Madura and sulfuric acid obtained from PT Petrokimia Gresik. The production process comprises four main stages: raw material pretreatment, reaction, crystallization, and product finishing. In the pretreatment stage, bittern is conditioned by reacting it with diluted NaOH (48% diluted to 7%) and diluted H₂SO₄ (98% diluted to 40%) prior to being fed into the reactors. During the reaction stage, bittern is first reacted with 7% NaOH to precipitate Mg(OH)₂, which is then separated and further reacted with 40% H₂SO₄ to form a magnesium sulfate solution. The crystallization stage involves concentrating the MgSO₄ solution using an evaporator before feeding it into a crystallizer, where MgSO₄·7H₂O crystals are formed. These crystals are subsequently separated, dried using a rotary dryer, cooled in a cooling conveyor, and then milled to approximately 150 mesh. The final product is stored in a silo prior to packaging. This thesis outlines the technical design considerations, process sequence, and operational requirements necessary for the establishment of a magnesium sulfate heptahydrate fertilizer plant. The results of the design study are expected to support the development of an efficient, feasible, and sustainable industrial process for utilizing bittern as a value-added raw material.
