Abstract
Ambre leaves (Geranium radula Cavan) are one of the essential oil–producing plants that contain the major compounds citronellol and geraniol, both of which are known to be effective as mosquito repellents. This study aims to obtain the yield and citronellol content in the essential oil of Ambre leaves and to determine the effect of solvent type and extraction time on the resulting citronellol content. The extraction process was carried out using the maceration method at 30°C for 1–5 days with various solvents, including 96% ethanol, n-hexane, benzene, chloroform, and ethyl acetate. The macerate was then purified through distillation to separate the essential oil from the solvent. The extracted oil was analyzed using GCMS to determine the citronellol content. The results showed that extraction time and solvent type had a significant effect on the yield and citronellol content. The highest yield was obtained using 96% ethanol with an extraction time of 4 days, reaching 12.013%, while the highest citronellol content was also found in 96% ethanol at 4 days, amounting to 28.22%. Nonpolar solvents such as n-hexane and benzene produced lower yields and citronellol levels compared to polar and semipolar solvents. Thus, 96% ethanol is the most effective solvent for extracting essential oils from Ambre leaves using the maceration method.
