Abstract
Avocado seeds are a potential source of starch, containing 79.45% starch (29.55% amylose and 49.90% amylopectin), along with various bioactive compounds like polyphenols and flavonoids, making them a viable alternative source for bioplastic production. This study aimed to synthesize bioplastic from avocado seed starch and to investigate the effect of different types and volumes of plasticizer on its properties. The bioplastic was fabricated by mixing 9 grams of avocado seed starch and 3 grams of chitosan, each dissolved in 100 ml of 1% acetic acid, with varying types and volumes of plasticizer. The mixture was heated at 70°C for 30 minutes, then cast in a petri dish and dried. The resulting bioplastics were characterized for thickness, tensile strength, elongation, biodegradability, functional groups, and morphology. The results showed that the thickness and elongation were directly proportional to the volume of plasticizer added. The highest thickness (0.56 mm) and elongation (30%) were achieved with 12 ml of sorbitol. Conversely, the tensile strength was inversely proportional to the plasticizer volume, with the maximum tensile strength of 33.5 MPa obtained with 8 ml of sorbitol. This research successfully demonstrates that bioplastic can be produced from avocado seed starch, and its properties can be tailored by adjusting the type and volume of the plasticizer. The findings are consistent with established theories and indicate that the produced bioplastic meets the required standards for characteristic testing.
