Abstract
This research aims to synthesize and characterize hydroxyapatite (HAp) based on Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) derived from limestone with the addition of gelatin using the sol–gel method. The variations used include gelatin concentrations of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%, as well as pH variations of 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 to determine the optimum conditions for HAp formation. Analyses were carried out using FTIR to identify functional groups and SEM–EDX to observe morphology and determine the Ca/P ratio. The results show that variations in gelatin concentration and pH significantly affect the yield and characteristics of hydroxyapatite. The highest yield of 95% was obtained with 30% gelatin at pH 10–12. FTIR analysis revealed PO₄³⁻, OH⁻, and CO₃²⁻ groups, indicating the formation of hydroxyapatite. SEM results showed a porous morphology with particle sizes ranging from 445 to 495 nm, and porosity decreased with increasing pH (from 60.73% to 50.85%). EDX analysis showed Ca/P ratios ranging from 1.76 to 1.81, close to the stoichiometric value of 1.67. Thus, the optimum conditions were obtained at 30% gelatin and pH 10, producing hydroxyapatite with good crystallinity, nanosized particles, and a Ca/P ratio close to the ideal value, making it a promising candidate for biomaterial applications, particularly for bone and dental implants.
