Abstract

Indonesia’s sodium carbonate demand is predominantly fulfilled through imports, as the country currently lacks production facilities that employ the carbonation process. To address this, a sodium carbonate plant with a capacity of 170,000 tons per year is planned for construction in the Krakatau Industrial Estate Cilegon, Cilegon, Banten. The plant will operate 330 days annually and require a workforce of approximately 204 employees. Sodium carbonate is produced by reacting sodium hydroxide with carbon dioxide in a carbonation reactor operating at 1.5 atm and 30°C. The reaction is exothermic, producing a sodium carbonate solution that is subsequently concentrated through evaporation, followed by crystallization and drying to obtain the final solid product. The main byproduct of the reaction is water, while unconverted carbon dioxide is recovered and returned to the CO₂ storage tank. Based on the preliminary economic evaluation, the proposed plant demonstrates favorable financial performance. The analysis shows a Rate of Investment (before tax) of 36.06%, a Rate of Investment (after tax) of 27.05%, a Payback Period of 3 years and 1 month, an Internal Rate of Return of 22.54%, and a Break-Even Point of 33.18%. These indicators confirm that the establishment of the sodium carbonate plant is economically viable.
