Abstract
The Kali Surabaya River is one of the most important rivers for the people of Surabaya City and is part of the Brantas Watershed system. However, with increasing population growth and the development of settlements and industries in the areas surrounding the river, the quality of the Kali Surabaya has been declining. This condition threatens aquatic biodiversity, including the plankton community which serves as the base of the food chain. The plankton community is often used as a bioindicator to monitor ecological changes in aquatic systems and is considered a good natural bioindicator due to its rapid response to fluctuations in environmental conditions. PCA is one of the most frequently used multivariate data analysis techniques when dealing with datasets containing quantitative variables across multiple dimensions. The research results show that the highest phytoplankton abundance value was at point T3 on Sunday, at 319 cells/ml, while the highest zooplankton abundance was at point T2 on Friday, at 8 cells/ml. The phytoplankton diversity index values ranged from 1.26–2.13, indicating that the water condition was classified as lightly to moderately polluted. The evenness index ranged from 0.66–1.00, indicating a relatively even distribution of the community, while the dominance index ranged from 0.17–1.00, indicating that several species were dominant at certain points. PCA analysis showed that the parameters of turbidity, temperature, DO, nitrate, phosphate, and COD were closely related to the composition of plankton at each observation point.
