Abstract
The demand for renewable energy has increased interest in biodiesel as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. This study focuses on the synthesis of CaO–MgO catalysts from natural dolomite through a process of dissolution, precipitation, and calcination at temperatures of 400–800 °C, followed by application in the production of biodiesel from vegetable oil. Characterization of the catalyst using BET, SEM–EDX, and GC–MS showed that higher combustion temperatures increased crystallinity but reduced surface area through sintering, which decreased catalytic activity. Optimal performance was achieved at 400 °C with a catalyst loading of 3%, yielding a biodiesel yield of 94.59% with viscosity and density values of 5.38 cSt and 0.8581 g/cm³, respectively. Although the FAME content reached 95.8%, slightly below international standards, these results indicate that CaO–MgO catalysts derived from dolomite are a low-cost and locally available option for efficient biodiesel production, offering potential to support sustainable energy development.
