Abstract
Well water remains the main source of clean water for rural communities; however, its quality often fails to meet drinking water standards due to contamination by heavy metals (Fe and Mn) and microorganisms such as Total Coliform. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of pineapple peel extract as a natural disinfectant in reducing Total Coliform, as well as the role of sugarcane bagasse activated carbon in adsorbing Fe, Mn, and improving the physical quality of water. The research method involved aeration, application of varying doses of pineapple peel extract (10, 20, 30 mL), sugarcane bagasse activated carbon (0, 500, 1000 mg), and different contact times (30, 60, 90 minutes). Water quality tests were carried out for Total Coliform, Fe, and Mn, followed by analysis using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The results showed that the optimum condition was achieved at a specific combination of contact time, extract dose, and activated carbon, with significant reductions observed across all parameters. Total Coliform decreased from 1600 to 14 CFU/100 mL (99%), color from 106 to 8 PtCo (92%), Fe from 0.50 to 0.14 mg/L (72%), and Mn from 1.85 to 0.60 mg/L (68%). Statistical analysis indicated that contact time was the most dominant factor affecting disinfection effectiveness, while activated carbon played a greater role in improving physical quality and reducing metal concentrations. Keywords: well water, pineapple peel extract, sugarcane bagasse activated carbon
