Abstract

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is widely applied for removing hydrophobic pollutants such as oil and grease, along with suspended solids and color-causing compounds in wastewater. However, its performance strongly depends on bubble characteristics and the physicochemical properties of the flocs formed during coagulation. This study investigates the combined effect of bubble size (coarse, fine, and microbubble) and coagulant type (Hydrochloromide—HCA, FeCl₃, and PAC) on the removal efficiency of oil & grease, turbidity, and color using a 5-L continuous laboratory-scale DAF unit. The influent wastewater contained 20 mg/L oil & grease, 142 NTU turbidity, and 25.7 TCU color. The results show that both bubble size and coagulant type significantly influence DAF performance. Microbubbles produced the most effective flotation due to their small diameter, high surface area, and prolonged residence time, which collectively enhance bubble–particle collision and attachment. Among the coagulants, HCA demonstrated the highest removal efficiency because it generated dense, compact, and hydrophobic flocs that strongly adhered to microbubbles. The synergistic interaction between microbubbles and HCA yielded the maximum removal efficiencies, achieving more than 80–90% oil & grease removal, 70–85% turbidity removal, and 60–75% color removal. These findings highlight the importance of optimizing both bubble characteristics and coagulant selection for improving DAF efficiency. The microbubble–HCA combination is recommended as the most effective operational strategy for treating oily wastewater. Keywords : dissolved air flotation, microbubble, bubble size, oil and grease removal, coagulation, HCA
