Abstract

Domestic wastewater from septic tank systems contains a high load of organic pollutants and nutrients, requiring effective treatment technology before being discharged into the environment. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) integrated with the microalga Chlorella sp. in reducing major contaminants in domestic wastewater. The experiment was conducted at a laboratory scale with variations in media volume and Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT). Water quality parameters analyzed included COD, BOD₅, TSS, ammonia, and total phosphate. The results showed that the MBBR integrated with Chlorella sp. effectively removed pollutants. The highest COD removal reached 92.31%, from an initial concentration of 174.72 mg/L to 13.44 mg/L, while BOD₅ was reduced by 93.83% from 124.48 mg/L to 7.68 mg/L. TSS removal efficiency was recorded at 81.82% (110 mg/L to 20 mg/L), whereas ammonia decreased by 93.09% (39.1 mg/L to 2.7 mg/L). Total phosphate was also reduced by 88.66%, from 3.8 mg/L to 0.431 mg/L. All effluent values complied with the Indonesian domestic wastewater discharge standard (Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 68/2016). Furthermore, the treated effluent extracted and applied as a biostimulant for spinach (Amaranthus sp.) showed enhanced vegetative growth compared to the control, although this aspect was not the primary focus of the study. Overall, the findings confirm that the Chlorella sp.-based MBBR is an effective and sustainable method for domestic wastewater treatment with potential added value in agricultural applications.
