Abstract

The tapioca processing industry generates large volumes of high-strength wastewater containing organic matter, suspended solids, and cyanogenic compounds that require proper treatment before discharge. This study focuses on the design of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for a tapioca production center located in North Bogor, aimed at ensuring compliance with environmental quality standards. The research includes characterization of raw wastewater, evaluation of pollutant loads, and selection of appropriate treatment processes based on technical, operational, and environmental criteria. Proposed treatment units include preliminary screening, equalization, anaerobic digestion, aerobic treatment, secondary clarification, and sludge handling. Design calculations were performed using standard engineering guidelines and relevant national regulations. The results indicate that the selected treatment configuration is capable of significantly reducing pollutants to meet the required effluent standards, while providing an efficient and sustainable solution for local tapioca producers. This design can serve as a reference for similar small- and medium-scale agro-industrial wastewater management systems.
