Abstract

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has experienced prolonged conflict since 1996. From 1996 to 2010, an estimated 200,000 cases of sexual violence related to the ongoing armed conflict were recorded. Since 2003, only 5% of peace agreement signatories have been women, and women’s representation in the National Assembly has remained at just 8.4%. As the UN agency focused on gender equality and women’s empowerment, UN Women has implemented UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) to address the situation in the Congo. This study aims to examine how UN Women implemented Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security in the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 2011 to 2024. The implementation will be analyzed using the Women, Peace, and Security framework. The findings show that under the participation pillar, UN Women initiated the establishment of the women’s organization Dynamique Nationale de Femmes Candidates (DYNAFEC). Under the prevention pillar, UN Women promoted positive masculinity. Under the protection pillar, UN Women provided funding to the Panzi Foundation for health and psychosocial services. Finally, under the relief and recovery pillar, UN Women carried out the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) program through the Community Violence Reduction (CVR) initiative
