Abstract
phenol plant with a capacity of 70,000 tons per year is planned to be built in the Cilegon Industrial Estate (KIEC), Banten, operating continuously for 330 days per year. The plant uses iodobenzene and sodium carbonate as raw materials with copper(II) oxide (CuO) as a catalyst. Phenol is produced through the hydrolysis of iodobenzene at 160°C and 7 atm, achieving a 96% conversion and 97.4% selectivity, with carbon dioxide as a by-product. The product stream is cooled, decanted, crystallized, centrifuged, and stored after purification to reach ≥99% phenol purity. The separated filtrate is recycled to improve raw material efficiency. The produced phenol is utilized in resin, plastic, pharmaceutical, antiseptic, textile dye, and cosmetic industries. The KIEC location is selected due to its accessibility to raw materials, transportation, skilled labor, and complete utilities. An automatic control system and comprehensive safety procedures are applied to ensure process stability and safe operation.
