Abstract
The design of a Nitrous Oxide (N₂O) plant with a production capacity of 40,000 tons per year is planned to be established in Cikampek, West Java. The plant operates continuously for 24 hours per day and 330 days per year. Ammonium nitrate, supplied by PT Multi Nitrotama Kimia, is used as the main raw material. Nitrous oxide serves various purposes, including use as a general anesthetic gas in medical applications and as a foaming agent in whipped cream production. The production process applies the thermal decomposition method of ammonium nitrate. Solid ammonium nitrate is melted with the addition of 8% water at 130°C to form a liquid phase. The molten feed is then introduced into a decomposition reactor at 240°C, where ammonium nitrate decomposes into nitrous oxide and water vapor, with minor side reactions producing ammonia and nitric acid. The reactor output is directed to a flash drum separator to remove water and nitric acid, followed by an absorption process to separate ammonia using water as a solvent. The nitrous oxide gas is then passed through an adsorption unit for drying and subsequently liquefied for storage in liquid form. The plant design follows a continuous operation system under a line-and-staff organizational structure, employing 195 personnel and occupying a total area of 25,340 m². The fixed capital investment is estimated at Rp 386,887,197,922 with a total capital investment of Rp 1,755,152,370,256. The project yields a return on investment (ROI) of 32.49% before tax and 24.37% after tax, with a payback period of 2 years and 11 months and a break-even point (BEP) of 34.61%. These results indicate that the proposed nitrous oxide plant is technically feasible and economically viable for large-scale production.
