Abstract
Peanut shell waste, an abundant agricultural by-product in Indonesia, contains high cellulose content, making it a potential raw material for sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC) synthesis. This study aimed to produce Na-CMC from peanut shell waste through alkalization and carboxymethylation, optimizing sodium hydroxide concentration and sodium monochloroacetate mass. Pretreatment steps such as pre-hydrolysis, delignification, and bleaching were conducted to improve cellulose purity. The synthesized Na-CMC was analyzed for purity, degree of substitution (DS), and NaCl content. Results showed that both NaOH concentration and Na-MCA mass significantly affected product quality. The optimum condition was 20% NaOH and 7 grams Na-MCA, yielding Na-CMC with 94.81% purity and a DS of 1.2137. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of functional groups including –OH, –COO⁻, and –CH₂, indicating successful modification. However, exceeding the optimum conditions led to decreased purity and DS due to side reactions and cellulose degradation. This research confirms the potential of peanut shell waste as a sustainable source for high-purity Na-CMC, suitable for industrial applications such as in textiles, adhesives, and paper.
