Abstract

Saponins are bioactive compounds with various benefits in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. Sengon leaves (Paraserianthes falcataria (L.) Nielsen) are known to contain saponins with fairly high levels. This study aims to determine the optimal conditions for saponin extraction using the soxhlet method with ethanol solvents. The variables used in this study were ethanol concentration (70, 75, 80, 85, and 90%) and extraction time (2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 hours). Saponin content analysis was performed using the UV-vis spectrophotometry method, while optimization was conducted using the response surface methodology (RSM). The results showed that the optimum conditions were obtained at an ethanol concentration of 80% and an extraction time of 4 hours, resulting in a saponin level of 4.63%. The optimization results showed that the applied extraction conditions showed high consistency between the experimental data and the calculation, so it could be relied upon to effectively determine the saponin levels. Thus, soxhlet extraction with 80% ethanol for 4 hours can be used to effectively extract saponins from sengon leaves.
