Abstract
Bittern is a by-product generated from the evaporation or precipitation of seawater that does not crystallize into salt. It contains minerals such as magnesium, calcium, sulfate, and sodium chloride. Bittern has the potential to be processed further to produce salt, helping to meet increasing salt demand, reduce waste, and enhance economic value. Purification is required to remove impurities and obtain high-purity salt. Impurities such as Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, and SO₄²⁻ can negatively affect salt quality and cause bitterness, making separation necessary. In this study, nanofiltration membranes were used as a pressure-driven separation technology, featuring pore sizes around 0.001 μm suitable for selective ion removal. The effects of pressure and operating time were evaluated to determine optimal separation performance. The highest rejection efficiency of 71.7708% was achieved at 8 atm and 120 minutes of operation. The highest salt mass fraction obtained was 84.35%, which is slightly below the Indonesian SNI 4435:2017 standard for iodized edible salt raw material (minimum 85%).
