Abstract
A methyl benzoate plant with a production capacity of 60,000 tons per year is planned to be established in the Kaltim Industrial Estate (KIE), Bontang, East Kalimantan. The plant will operate continuously for 24 hours per day and 330 days per year. The main raw materials used are benzoic acid supplied by The Chemical Company and methanol from PT Kaltim Methanol Industri, with Zeolite Hβ serving as the catalyst. The production process is carried out through an esterification reaction in a packed-bed reactor at 60°C, using a molar ratio of benzoic acid:methanol = 1:8. The reactor effluent is separated into light and heavy phases using a decanter. The light phase is fed to Distillation Column I to separate methanol, which is then recycled back to the mixing stage, while the heavy phase is directed to Distillation Column II to purify methyl benzoate to a 99.9% purity level. The final product is stored in a storage tank at 30°C. The plant will occupy a land area of 22,050 m² and employ 172 personnel. The total investment required is Rp 1,243,948,867,900, consisting of a Fixed Capital Investment (FCI) of Rp 788,060,123,681 and a Working Capital Investment (WCI) of Rp 455,888,744,219. The annual production cost is estimated at Rp 2,735,332,465,315, with raw material costs of Rp 971,401,063,537 and utility costs of Rp 42,544,746,272. The economic analysis shows a Return on Investment (ROI) of 39.26% before tax and 29.45% after tax, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 19.02%, a Payback Period (PBP) of 4 years and 7 months, and a Break Even Point (BEP) of 34.04%. Based on the technical and economic evaluations, the establishment of the methyl benzoate plant is considered technically and economically feasible.
