Abstract
This internship was conducted at the Surabaya City Environmental Agency (Dinas Lingkungan Hidup Kota Surabaya) from February to June 2024 as part of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program. The main objective of this activity was to analyze the effectiveness of environmental education and community empowerment programs in reducing household waste generation through the Kampung Zero Waste (KZW) initiative. Data were collected from two pilot locations—RW 2 Gubeng and RW 7 Ketabang—using direct waste weighing before and after the implementation of environmental counseling. The study employed quantitative and qualitative approaches, including statistical analysis (t-test) and community interviews, to evaluate behavioral changes in waste management practices. The results showed a significant reduction in waste generation after the program implementation, supported by increased community participation and awareness of the 5R principles (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot). The Kampung Zero Waste program proved effective in fostering sustainable waste management behavior at the community level. This internship provided practical experience in environmental education, data collection, and participatory waste management, contributing to the enhancement of technical and social competencies relevant to environmental engineering practice.
