Abstract

One of the carbon dioxide (CO2) separation technologies that have been applied in various industries is the chemical absorption process. The solvent that is commonly used in the industry for CO 2 gas absorption is piperazine (PZ) promoted methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) solution . In this study, a simulation of acid gas absorption with PZ promoted MDEA solution in the sieve tray column using MATLAB® R2019b software with a rate-based modeling approach. The mathematical model is based on a two-film model with the as- sumption that one tray is a perfectly stirred tank. The model that has been developed is then solved numeri- cally using the Secant method. In this mathematical modeling, kinetics data of CO2 reaction into MDEA-PZ solution are needed, solubility data of gas components in lean amine solution and mass transfer data obtained from literature and previous research. The data are validated with data from the petroleum and natural gas industry. The research variables were lean solution flow rate and PZ concentration. From the simulat ion results in the same operating conditions as the field data, the difference in CO2 removal is 1.62% and 0.31% for H2S. Key words: absorption; MDEA; PZ; simulation
