Abstract

Corrosion is a decrease in the quality or breakdown of a metal because it reacts with its environment. One way to prevent this is by adding a corrosion inhibitor. Corrosion inhibitor is a chemical added to the corrosive environment, although in very small amounts (ppm), it can reduce the metal corrosion rate. One that can be used as a corrosion inhibitor is water hyacinth because it contains lignin compounds. The materials used in this study were water hyacinth, sodium hydroxide, 3.5% sodium chloride solution, and stainless steel. The water hyacinth is first extracted with sodium hydroxide to extract lignin compounds which are then used as corrosion inhibitors in stainless steel. The corrosion rate test was carried out by the potentiodynamic polarization method. From this research, the best results were obtained on 201 stainless steel with concentration of addition corrosion inhibitor 100 ppm a corrosion rate test of 0.0087 mm / year and also on 304 stainless steel with a concentration addition of corrosion inhibitor 100 ppm a corrosion rate test of 0.0025 mm / year. These results indicate that water hyacinth is effective to be used as a corrosion inhibitor in stainless steel in a medium of 3.5% sodium chloride solution.
