Abstract
Indonesia energy needs increase by approximately 7% per year. Biodiesel with a minimum purity of 96.5% is a potential alternative, one of which comes from nyamplung oil which contains high oil in its seeds. This study aims to examine the effect of MWCNT on the combustion characteristics of nyamplung oil biodiesel droplets, especially on temperature parameters, ignition delay time, burning rate and flame height visualization. The study was conducted experimentally with variations in MWCNT concentrations of 0, 100, 200, 300, and 400 ppm which will be mixed using a magnetic stirrer while the combustion process is recorded with a 60 fps camera and temperature data is recorded through a data logger. MWCNT can increase the combustion temperature due to its very high thermal conductivity. The study shows that the addition of MWCNT reduces the ignition delay time value, this is due to the high thermal conductivity of MWCNT which accelerates heat transfer. The burning rate constant value is caused by the very large number of nanoparticles so that it can increase thermal conductivity which results in an increased burning rate value. The flame height is caused by the heating of the droplet and the accumulation of fuel vapor around the droplet surface during the ignition delay period, which marks the initial stage of combustion. The flame width is reduced because particle agglomeration tends to inhibit the lateral diffusion of vapor, resulting in a narrower flame width. MWCNTs have high thermal conductivity and the effect of thermal radiation becomes more dominant, resulting in more efficient fuel evaporation and expanding the reaction zone, which causes a wider flame width.
