Abstract

Industrial alcohol production generates wastewater with high concentrations of organic and inorganic pollutants, which, if not treated properly, may cause severe environmental impacts. This study was conducted to design a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for an alcohol industry with an average wastewater discharge of 420 m³/day. The wastewater characteristics include BOD of 7,140 mg/L, COD of 10,155 mg/L, TSS of 3,630 mg/L, pH of 4.1, and sulfide concentration of 0.119 mg/L, which exceed the permissible limits set by the East Java Governor Regulation No. 72 of 2013. The treatment system was designed through a series of units, including conveyance channels, screening, neutralization and equalization, coagulation-flocculation, primary sedimentation, activated sludge processes, secondary clarification, and sludge drying beds. The design process involved mass balance analysis, dimensioning of each treatment unit, hydraulic profile development, and cost estimation. The proposed system is expected to significantly reduce BOD, COD, TSS, and sulfide concentrations to meet effluent quality standards before discharge into receiving waters. The results demonstrate that the designed WWTP can achieve compliance with regulatory requirements and provide an environmentally sound solution for managing industrial alcohol wastewater. This project highlights the application of environmental engineering principles in wastewater management and pollution control.
