Abstract
The preliminary design of a n-butyl oleate plant with a production capacity of 33,000 tons per year is proposed to be established in Gresik, East Java. The plant operates continuously for 24 hours per day and 330 days per year, utilizing butanol, oleic acid, sulfuric acid catalyst, and sodium hydroxide sourced from local suppliers. n-Butyl oleate is widely used as a non-polar solvent, plasticizer, lubricant additive, cosmetic emollient, perfume carrier, pharmaceutical excipient, and has potential as an eco-friendly solvent and alternative fuel. The production process employs esterification of oleic acid and n-butanol using sulfuric acid catalyst in a continuous stirred tank reactor at 100°C and 1.013 bar, achieving 90% conversion. The product undergoes neutralization and separation, followed by purification through two distillation columns, yielding ≥99% purity n-butyl oleate as the main product. The economic evaluation indicates a Fixed Capital Investment (FCI) of Rp 632.43 billion, a Total Capital Investment (TCI) of Rp 1.23 trillion, with an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 26.22% and a payback period of 3 years 10 months, showing that the plant is technically and economically feasible.
