Abstract

This research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of sodium silica carbonate (NaSiCO₃) composites derived from rice husk waste using the sol-gel method with CO₂ as a reactant. Rice husk was selected due to its high silica content, making it a potential raw material for catalyst development. The study involved silica extraction from rice husk ash using NaOH, synthesis of NaSiCO₃ through CO₂ acidification at various dilution ratios of sodium silicate solution and pH levels, followed by characterization using XRF, XRD, and SEM-EDX analyses. The results indicated that variations in dilution ratios and pH significantly influenced the morphology, composition, and crystallinity of the synthesized composites. The obtained NaSiCO₃ composites contained Na, Si, and carbonate elements with both amorphous and crystalline phases, depending on the operating conditions. Application testing demonstrated that NaSiCO₃ has potential as a heterogeneous base catalyst in the transesterification process of palm oil to biodiesel, offering advantages of stability, reusability, and environmental friendliness. This study highlights the potential of rice husk waste utilization as a value-added material and a sustainable solution for biodiesel catalyst development.
