Abstract
Mangove forest along the coastal area of Banyuwangi Regency play a vital role in maintaining coastal ecosystem balance, protecting shorelines from abrasion, supporting biodivrsity, and serving as a source of livelihood for local communities. However, land conversion activities and development pressures on coastal areas have led to the degradation pf mangrove ecosystem in this region. This study aims to map the vegetation condition of mangrove forest in the Bedul Mangrove Forest area, Banyuwangi Regency, using remote sensing methods with vegetation index approaches-specifically NDVI(Normlized Difference Vegetation Index) and EVI (Enchanced Vegetation Index)-based on Landsat 8 satelite imagery. Data processing was conducted using ArcGIS software to generate vegetation distribution maps and to analyze the relationship between vegetation indices and tree physical parameters. The analysis shows that NDVI values are higher than EVI values in areas with dense vegetation, reflecting NDVI’s sensitivity to canopy greenness. Regression analysis between vegetation indices and tree diameter indicates a significant relationship, although with a low coefficient of detrmination, suggesting that other variables may also influence vegetation conditions. A two-sample t-test assuming unequeal variances reveals a significant difference between NDVI and EVI values, reinforcing the interpretation that each index offers distinct characteristic. Based on the data processing results, the average NDVI value obtained is 0.68 (13.50439 / 20), which falls into the category of high vegetation. Meanwhile, the average EVI value is 0.45 (9.19101 / 20), which also falls into the high vegetation category. The results indicate that the average NDVI value is clearly higher than the EVI value. Therefore, remote sensing methods combined with geographic information system (GIS) analysis are proven effective for mapping and evaluating mangrove forest conditions in the coastal region of Banyuwangi. The results of this study are expected to serve as a reference for mangrove conservation planning and to support suistainable coastal development policies, particularly within the framework of environmental management in the field of Civil Engineering.
