Abstract

The accuracy of hydrological analysis plays a crucial role in dam planning, particularly in determining the design flood discharge. One approach widely used is the Synthetic Unit Hydrograph (SUH), which represents the watershed's response to effective rainfall. This study aims to compare peak flood discharges using three SUH methods: the Nakayasu SUH, ITB-1 SUH, and Gama-1 SUH, with a case study on the Bagong Dam Watershed, Trenggalek Regency. The analysis was conducted using daily rainfall data processed through the Log Pearson Type III method to generate design rainfall for return periods of 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years. The results showed that the Nakayasu method produced the highest peak discharge, reaching 81.407 m³/s for the 100-year return period, with a time to peak (Tp) of 3 hours. The ITB-1 method produced a peak discharge of 56.861 m³/s with a Tp of 6 hours, while the Gama-1 method resulted in the lowest peak discharge of 46,826 m³/s with a Tp of p3 hours. The Nakayasu SUH demonstrated a moderate response with a wider but taller hydrograph curve. The ITB-1 SUH showed a flatter curve with a longer peak time, whereas the Gama-1 SUH produced a sharper and faster hydrograph, although with lower peak discharges. These variations highlight that the selection of SUH methods depends on the watershed's characteristics and the objectives of the planning process. For safetyprioritized design, the Nakayasu method may be preferable. This study provides valuable insight into selecting an appropriate SUH for the Bagong Dam planning.
