Abstract

The development of cellulose acetate membranes from natural fibers offers a promising alternative for environmentally friendly and sustainable separation technologies. In this study, kapok (Ceiba pentandra) fibers were utilized as the raw material for the synthesis of cellulose acetate membranes. The process involved the extraction and purification of cellulose from kapok fibers, followed by acetylation to produce cellulose acetate. The obtained cellulose acetate was then fabricated into membranes using the phase inversion method. Characterization was carried out to evaluate the chemical structure, morphology, and performance of the membranes. The results showed that kapok fibers can serve as a viable cellulose source for membrane production, with membranes exhibiting suitable porosity, mechanical strength, and potential application in water purification and other separation processes. This research highlights the potential of underutilized natural fibers as a renewable resource for membrane technology development
