Abstract

This final project presents the preliminary design of a formaldehyde plant with a production capacity of 70,000 tons per year, to be constructed in the Kaltim Industrial Estate (KIE), Bontang, East Kalimantan. The plant utilizes methanol supplied by PT Kaltim Methanol Industri and air as raw materials. Formaldehyde serves as an essential intermediate for the production of formic acid, resins, various chemical compounds, preservatives, and 1,4-butanediol. The production process employs the BASF Complete Conversion method using a silver catalyst. In this process, liquid methanol is vaporized and mixed with air, then heated to 700°C before entering a fixed-bed multitube reactor operating at 1 atm. Within the reactor, methanol undergoes partial oxidation and dehydrogenation to produce formaldehyde. The product gas stream is separated in an absorber unit, where formaldehyde is recovered as a liquid product while inert gases are released.
