Abstract

Cellulose acetate was synthesized from corn stalk cellulose through acetylation using varying volumes of acetic acid (25, 35, 45, 55, and 65 ml) and reaction times (1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, and 2 h). Corn stalk powder (100 mesh) was converted into cellulose by delignification with 17.5% NaOH followed by bleaching with 4% NaOH and 4% H₂O₂. Acetylation was carried out with glacial acetic acid and 0.5 ml of 98% H₂SO₄ as catalyst. The results showed that higher acetic acid volume increased acetyl content and degree of substitution, while longer acetylation time improved these values only up to optimal conditions before declining. The highest yield (70.26%), acetyl content (40.4%), and degree of substitution (2.5) were obtained at 65 ml acetic acid and 1.5 h. FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of O-H, C=O, and C-O ester groups, indicating successful acetylation. Keywords: Cellulose acetate, cellulose, corn stalk, acetylation, FTIR
