Abstract

This study presents a preliminary design for a Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) plant utilizing esterification and transesterification processes. FAME, widely known as biodiesel, is an environmentally friendly alternative fuel derived from renewable resources. The esterification process is applied to reduce the free fatty acid (FFA) content in feedstock, while the subsequent transesterification reaction converts triglycerides into methyl esters using alcohol and a base catalyst. The conceptual plant design considers process flow diagrams, material and energy balances, as well as equipment specifications to achieve optimal production efficiency. Economic and technical evaluations are conducted to assess the feasibility of the proposed plant. The results indicate that the integration of esterification and transesterification ensures high conversion rates, product quality in accordance with biodiesel standards, and potential competitiveness as a sustainable energy source. This preliminary design contributes to the development of renewable fuel industries and supports the transition toward cleaner energy utilization.
