Abstract
This study investigates the effect of varying photocatalysts—Fe₂O₃, Fe₂O₃–SiO₂, and Fe₂O₃–TiO₂—on the degradation of Cr(VI) ions in synthetic wastewater. The methods employed include literature review and experimental observation to evaluate the effectiveness of each photocatalyst based on dosage and irradiation time. Results show that increasing the photocatalyst dose enhances the removal efficiency of Cr(VI), with the highest effectiveness observed at a dose of 0.6 g/L. Longer irradiation times also yielded better outcomes, with optimal removal achieved at 90 minutes. Fe₂O₃–TiO₂ demonstrated the best performance in reducing Cr(VI) due to the formation of heterojunctions that facilitate charge separation. In contrast, pure Fe₂O₃ was more effective than Fe₂O₃–SiO₂, as the SiO₂ likely formed a coating that partially or fully covered the Fe₂O₃ surface, thereby hindering light and pollutant contact. XRD characterization revealed the presence of the hematite phase (Fe₂O₃) in all samples, while the TiO₂ phase was less defined and SiO₂ appeared in an amorphous form. This study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate photocatalysts in the treatment of wastewater containing the heavy metal Cr(VI).
