Abstract
Laundry wastewater contains high levels of Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and turbidity, which, if not properly treated, can cause environmental pollution. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of natural biocoagulant derived from tamarind seeds (Tamarindus indica) and commercial biocoagulant (chitosan) in the coagulation-flocculation process for reducing TSS, turbidity, and evaluating the characteristics of the resulting flocs. The study variables include variations in coagulant dosage (10–50 ml) and solvent concentration (NaCl for tamarind seeds and acetic acid for chitosan). The treatment was conducted using the jar test method, and performance was assessed by measuring TSS, turbidity, pH, particle size distribution (via PSA), and floc morphology (via SEM). The results showed that tamarind seed biocoagulant with 1 M NaCl solvent at a 50 ml dosage reduced TSS to 80 mg/L and turbidity to 101.5 NTU, approaching the quality standard. Chitosan also demonstrated good performance, achieving minimum TSS of 72 mg/L and turbidity of 93.5 NTU with 4% acetic acid concentration. Flocs formed using tamarind seeds tended to be larger and more compact compared to those from chitosan. ANOVA statistical analysis indicated that coagulant dosage and pH significantly affected pollutant removal efficiency. Therefore, tamarind seed biocoagulant has the potential to serve as an environmentally friendly alternative in laundry wastewater treatment. Keywords: biocoagulant, tamarind seed, chitosan, TSS, turbidity, flocculation, laundry wastewater.
