Abstract
Literacy interest in Indonesia remains a significant challenge, as reflected in the low level of reading enthusiasm among the population. Based on UNESCO data and PISA surveys, Indonesia is ranked among the ten countries with the lowest literacy levels. However, a report from the National Library (Perpusnas) shows an increase in the Reading Enthusiasm Index (TGM), reaching 63.9 points in 2022, with East Java Province ranking fifth nationally. Bangkalan Regency obtained a TGM score of 67.2 points, which falls into the high category and indicates great potential for utilizing library facilities. The Bangkalan Regency Public Library currently holds a collection of 19,407 titles, which remains far below the national standard, considering the regency’s population of 1,047,306 people. According to the Regulation of the Head of the National Library, regency/city libraries with a population of more than one million require collections ranging between 25,000 and 75,000 titles. The limited capacity of the 1,000-square-meter library building poses a major obstacle to expanding the collection adequately. To address this, the construction of a new, larger library building is proposed, adopting a therapeutic architecture approach. The therapeutic architecture-based design approach was chosen to enhance the literacy experience while creating a comfortable and recreational space that supports social interaction. The design principles include attention to privacy, noise management, integration of natural elements, and optimization of spatial zoning. The library is designed not only as an educational facility but also as a recreational and refreshing literacy tourism destination. Through this concept, the library is expected to improve the reading interest of the Bangkalan community while providing an innovative and inclusive public space.
