Abstract

Gayam fruit peel (Inocarpus fagifer), an organic waste with a cellulose content of 35.24%, has the potential to be used as a raw material for bioethanol through conversion to glucose. This study optimized the acid hydrolysis process using HCl using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) method. The initial delignification stage with 8% NaOH at 80°C for 60 minutes reduced lignin from 12.36% to 4.603% and increased cellulose to 37.536%. Hydrolysis with varying HCl concentrations (1–5 N) and times (90–210 minutes) produced the highest glucose content of 25.3% at 5 N and 150 minutes. RSM optimization showed optimum conditions at 5 N HCl concentrations and 156.67 minutes, with a predicted glucose yield of 24.3668% and an actual yield of 4.7217% (47217 ppm). Increasing time and concentration increased glucose to the optimum, but decreased due to degradation to 5-HMF and formic acid. An R² value of 99.65% indicates a good fit for the model's prediction results.
