Basically, biodegradable plastic manufacturing uses the main ingredients as starch or cellulose. The potential raw material for bioplastic synthesis is that taro starch is abundant in Indonesia but its use relatively small and cellulose from Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB) which only 10% of the EFB has been utilized in industry. This purpose of of this study is to determine the effect of adding starch (taro) and cellulose (EFB) on bioplastic characteristics. This study uses a comparison of starch (taro), cellulose (EFB) and chitosan with a composition of 0.5: 0.5: 1; 0.625: 0.375: 1; 0.75: 0.25: 1; 0.875: 0.125: 1; and 1: 0: 1 (w/ w) and sorbitol variations are added as much as 1 ml, 1.5 ml, 2 ml, 2.5 ml, and 3 ml. For the gelatinization temperature of starch at 70 - 80 °C. The results obtained were then analyzed for mechanical strength, swelling analysis, SEM analysis, and biodegradation test using EM-4. The tensile strength of bioplastics is obtained by increasing the addition of cellulose and starch, inversely proportional to the addition of sorbitol can reduce the tensile strength and can increase the elongation of bioplastics. Where as the results of bioplastic characterization are obtained to have tensile strength and elongation that are in accordance with SNI (Indonesian National Standard) tensile strength at dominant composition 0.5: 0.5: 1 (w / w); percent elongation in dominant composition 1: 0: 1 (w / w), as well as the ability of bioplastics to be completely degraded.
