Abstract
This study aims to reduce the levels of copper (Cu) heavy metal in electroplating liquid waste from CV Elmech Technology using a chemical precipitation method with NaOH. The liquid waste has a Cu content of 22,637 mg/L, far above the quality standard set by East Java Governor Regulation Number 72 of 2013, which is 0.6 mg/L. The independent variables used are the volume of NaOH (120, 150, 180, 210, and 240 ml) and the settling time (40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 minutes). The results showed that the volume of NaOH that produced the highest sediment weight was at 180 ml with a pH of 9, resulting in a Cu removal efficiency of 99.982% with a final Cu content of 4.03 mg/L. However, at a NaOH volume of 240 ml, removal efficiency reached 99.999% with a final Cu content of 0.23 mg/L, but the precipitate weight decreased due to the formation of soluble complex compounds. Observed phenomena included the effect of volume, pH, and precipitation time on the resulting Cu(OH)₂ precipitate. At pH above 9, the formation of hydroxide complexes such as [Cu(OH)₄]²⁻, which are soluble in water, resulted in a reduction in precipitate weight despite a decrease in the Cu content in the filtrate. This study also found that a relatively optimal precipitation time of 120 minutes was sufficient to ensure consistent results. The resulting Cu(OH)₂ precipitate has the potential for further utilization in various applications, such as concrete mixes, metal coatings, and even antifouling agents in the paint industry.
