Abstract
This study aims to assess the potential of thermal imaging technology as an early detection method for Fusarium sp. infection in rice seeds. The three rice varieties used were Ciherang, IR64, and Mekongga, each given four treatments: control with germination <95%, control with germination >95%, and Fusarium sp. inoculation at concentrations of 10⁶ and 10⁷ conidia/ml. Seed temperature imaging was carried out daily for seven days of incubation using a Fluke iSee TC01A thermal camera. The results showed that the surface temperature of infected seeds increased significantly from day 2 to day 4. Statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney) showed a significant temperature difference between treatments (p <0.05), especially in seeds inoculated with Fusarium sp. 10⁷ conidia/ml. Logistic regression analysis yielded high odds ratio values (e.g., OR = 150.279 for the Ciherang variety), while the ROC curve showed an AUC value > 0.90 for all varieties, indicating a very high level of prediction accuracy. The highest AUC values, with an average temperature of Fusarium sp.-inoculated seeds, were recorded for Ciherang on day 2 at 28.3oC (SD=0.4), IR64 on day 3 at 29.9oC (SD=1.2), and Mekongga on day 4 at 31.1oC (SD=1.4). The average accuracy values in distinguishing healthy and Fusarium sp.-infected seeds for Ciherang, IR64, and Mekongga were 84.4%, 87.2%, and 86%, respectively. Thus, thermal imaging proved effective, sensitive, and specific in detecting the presence of Fusarium sp. in rice seeds early before the appearance of visual symptoms. Keywords: Rice seed, Fusarium sp., thermal imaging, temperature, early detection
