Abstract

This study investigates the performance of a Savonius type Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) by analyzing the influence of blade angle variations and wind speed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The research aims to evaluate the aerodynamic behavior of the turbine through velocity and pressure contour distribution, as well as to determine the power coefficient (C_p) under varying conditions. Simulations were conducted using SolidWorks 2023 with blade angles of 100°, 105°, 110°, 115°, 120°, 125°, and 130°, and wind speeds of 8 m/s, 9 m/s, and 10 m/s. The results show that the highest power coefficient (C_p) of 0.627 was achieved at a blade angle of 120° and wind speed of 8 m/s, with an efficiency of 63%. At 9 m/s, the highest power coefficient (C_p) reached was 0.548 with 55% efficiency, also at 120°, while at 10 m/s, the maximum power coefficient (C_p) of 0.513 was obtained at 115°, corresponding to 51.3% efficiency. The analysis of velocity and pressure contours revealed significant airflow variation influenced by changes in Reynolds number and blade geometry. These findings confirm that the optimal performance of a Savonius wind turbine is achieved through the appropriate combination of blade angle and wind velocity. This research supports further development of efficient wind energy systems suitable for low to moderate wind conditions.
