Abstract

Sodium nitrate (NaNO₃) is one of the most important chemical compounds widely used across various industries and produced in large quantities. The demand for sodium nitrate in Indonesia continues to rise due to its broad application in sectors such as explosives, fertilizers, glassmaking, charcoal briquettes, and pharmaceuticals. This plant design proposes the production of sodium nitrate from sodium carbonate and nitric acid using a synthetic process with a capacity of 50,000 tons per year. The plant is planned to be located in the Indotaisei Industrial Area, Sector IA, Kalihurip, Cikampek, Karawang, West Java. The synthetic production process involves five main stages: reaction, concentration, crystallization, separation, and drying. In the reaction stage, 53% nitric acid solution is introduced into a reactor along with sodium carbonate, undergoing a neutralization reaction that produces sodium nitrate, water, and carbon dioxide (CO₂), with nearly 100% conversion at 60°C and 1 atm. Water is then partially evaporated in the concentration stage at 100°C and 1 atm. Crystallization does not yield complete solidification of the product, as it depends on the final concentration level. The resulting slurry is processed in a centrifuge to separate crystals from the mother liquor. The solid cake is dried in a rotary dryer, cooled on a cooling conveyor, ground in a ball mill, and finally packaged.
