Abstract

This study numerically analyzes the effect of adding guide vanes on turbulent flow (Re = 5.08×105) inside a 90° elbow pipe to address flow issues. This CFD simulation tests variations in the number (1, 2, 3) and orientation (horizontal/vertical) of guide vanes. The baseline case without guide vanes shows severe flow separation (u/Uavg = 0,2) due to extreme differences in the Coefficient of Pressure (Cp) (peak +1,3 minimum −0,9). The configuration with 3 horizontal guide vanes proved most effective in improving flow quality, preventing separation (u/Uavg = 0,8) and significantly stabilizing Cp. Conversely, the vertical orientation proved ineffective. However, paradoxically, the energy efficiency evaluation shows that the case without guide vanes has the lowest Minor Loss Coefficient (KL) of 1,00. All configurations with guide vanes actually increase total energy losses, with KL ranging from 1,09 to 2,14. This conclusion confirms that although horizontal guide vanes improve flow characteristics, their physical drag is greater than their aerodynamic benefits, making the tested design energy inefficient.
